![]() On the rare occasion when I took a damage dealer to a casual ops run, I usually left StarParse off, even if others were trying to coax people into joining the group log for the "fun" of competition. I looked at healing meters there to see how well me and my co-healers were sharing the burden, because I didn't want to feel like I was making things difficult for anyone else, but I was always quite content with what I saw. While I also played and levelled other roles later, healer has always remained my identity, and the only role I played in progression content. I levelled my very first character with my boyfriend at the time, so I specced into Combat Medic as soon as I unlocked my first talent point and never looked back. My focus in SWTOR has been on playing healers from day one. ![]() It's about the impact this change has had on me personally and the way I see myself in the game. I have seen some negative comments about low dps on the forums and in general chat though - places that are rarely friendly at the best of times, mind you, but at least they didn't have that particular stick to wield against their fellow players in the past.Īnyway, this post isn't about anyone behaving badly towards anyone else over what they saw on a damage meter. Not to mention that I think most SWTOR players just aren't as fussed about numbers as players of other MMOs, what with the game's heavy focus on story. which makes it harder for the average person to think about numbers all the time. Or how about the fact that SWTOR doesn't allow addons? StarParse, the tool most commonly used to turn the combat log into a more readable format, is more of a "companion app", so it's not automatically there every time you log in - I'm sure I'm not the only person who uses it but doesn't actually think about firing it up unless I'm about to enter an operation. There have always been many similarities between the two games, but there are also important differences that continue to affect the way people behave.įor example group finding and PvP are not cross-server, so if you're a jerk to someone, there might be consequences. Some of that might simply be lack of general awareness about the change to combat logging, considering that it's still early days, but I think that even as this knowledge becomes more widespread, the SWTOR community as a whole isn't really in danger of changing into a bunch of people obsessed with parses. ![]() Now, the good news is that SWTOR hasn't changed into WoW overnight. Legacy of the Sith is here, and now you can see everyone and anyone's numbers, whether they want you to or not. My first reaction to this news was very negative, and I was low-key kind of hoping against all reason that Bioware might end up changing their mind at the last minute, but they didn't. Naturally, not long after I wrote that post, I found out that with the Legacy of the Sith expansion, SWTOR was going to get rid of the personal logging system it had used for a decade, and was instead going to replace it with a system where everyone can see everything, just like in WoW. In that post, I cited SWTOR as an example of how to do damage meters right, since SWTOR's more restrictive personal logging gave you access to all the (in my opinion) legitimate uses for meters such as wanting to increase your personal performance or having a shared log in a progression team to better understand damage patterns in difficult content, without any of the downsides such as other players constantly judging everyone around them by their numbers - because you couldn't know anyone's else's numbers unless that person explicitly joined a shared group log with you. Last autumn I wrote a post on my WoW blog called " The Toxicity of Damage Meters", in which I laid out why the general WoW community's obsession with measuring everything, all the time, is very off-putting to me. Philip Reed has a piece from the Deus Ex line that he still needs to open. Just be prepared to want more of them within moments of opening your first one. get out there and find yourself one of the Play Arts Kai action figures and see for yourself how cool the line is. Incredible works of art, and I’m already thinking I need to snap pics of another one of the toys from this series so that I can share them with you guys. They cost more than what you’ll find from Hasbro or Mattel, but the toys aren’t near the price of Hot Toys, Sideshow Collectibles, or 3A while still being works of art. You need to buy at least one release in the Play Arts Kai series ( search*) because these are some of the best action figures on the market today. Looks to me like Square Enix paid the factory extra to do a great job during the paint stage. Expanding some of the photos here will support this statement you may spot the odd fuzzy line here or there, but for the most part all of the paint is where it should be. I suspect part of that’s because armor is easier to paint than flesh, but regardless of the reasons I have to say that the Play Arts Kai Jorge* is a winner in the paint department. But regardless of the influence, the result is excellent paintwork with almost no rough spots. I had completely missed that, but now that I’ve seen it I cannot unsee the color influence. ![]() Huge thanks to Mario ( blog) for pointing out in a comment on my McFarlane Halo Reach Jorge review that the character’s color schemes has a bit of a Boba Fett influence to it. And the bulky nature of the character makes the limited leg poseability less of an issue than it can be for Batman Batman should be more flexible and poseable than Jorge. Overall, a nice number of joints and a pretty good level of poseability. And the hips have the same weird problem as Batman where the cod piece-like part of the toy doesn’t always hide the hip joints perfectly. Legs – Play Arts joints at the hips and ankles, double-hinged knees. The shoulder pads are connected with small ball joints which is a nice touch. It really helps give the figure the “broad shoulders” look. And the should is actually a double Play Arts joint, with one connecting to the body and a second immediately after that. Arms – Play Arts joints at the shoulder, elbows, and wrists.Torso – One Play Arts joint for an ab crunch. The huge armor plate over the chest looks like it would cause problems for the head - at least, that’s what I expected - but the neck joint works just fine. But rather than make you read an older review I’ll just run down the various points: The Play Arts Kai Jorge* feels a lot like the Play Arts Kai Batman* when it comes to articulation, with the two having basically identical points of articulation. Great work from Square Enix and exactly why I’m going to keep buying the occasional action figure from this series.Ĭlick to expand the image in a new window. But still, it’s nice to see that the extra cash I paid was worth it. To be fair, this toy was almost five times the cost and is significantly larger so it should have a better sculpt. I thought the McFarlane Jorge has a great sculpt, but once I had these two toys side-by-side I could see that their Jorge was merely adequate and blown away by this version of the character. Every detail is tight and clean, and the sculpt of the character is as perfect as I could have hoped for. The Play Arts Kai Jorge*, as the photos here prove, looks remarkable. Truth! Would I ever kid about your toy collections? Seriously, though, I understand that $40+ feels like a lot for an action figure - especially if your experience is with mass-market action figures like you find at Wal-Mart of Target - but the quality of the Play Arts Kai line so significantly exceeds what Mattel or Hasbro bring us that these are easily worth skipping three or four DC Universe Classics or Marvel Legends action figures just to buy one toy. If you had any questions at all after my Batman review) as to whether or not this series is fantastic then let me try and answer those questions right now: Not only is the entire Play Arts Kai series ( search*) awesome but you may collapse and lose consciousness if you don’t have at least one toy from the line on your shelves. for a fun toy that’s durable and looks great.Ĭlick to expand the photo in a new window. How about we marry those two together and construct an entirely new review. Last summer I posted a review of the McFarlane Toys Halo Reach Jorge* action figure ( review here). Over the weekend I posted a review of the Play Arts Kai Batman* ( review here). Series: Halo * Manufacturer: Square Enix * Year: 2011 "The Hunted Child" contains a sample of " Bring the Noise" performed by Public Enemy."Hit the Deck" contains a sample of " Coonskin No More" performed by Scatman Crothers."Shut Up, Be Happy" contains a sample of " Black Sabbath (song)" performed by " Black Sabbath"."Freedom of Speech" (featuring Jello Biafra) " What Ya Wanna Do?" (featuring Bronx Style Bob, Donald D, Everlast, Hen Gee, Nat The Cat, Randy Mac, Shakell Shabazz, Toddy Tee, MC Taste, and Divine Styler.) "Shut Up, Be Happy" (featuring Jello Biafra) The video featured some footage of the Dope Jam tour, including Doug E Fresh, KRS-One and Kool Moe Dee. In the first section, he said that some of the footage was of poor quality because it was filmed on equipment from a pawnbroker or stolen from a mall. This mixed footage of Ice-T's gigs with his own commentary. The album was accompanied by a VHS entitled The Iceberg. The album ends with in "My Word Is Bond", featuring Syndicate members telling one exaggerated story after another against a looped sample of Slick Rick saying "Stop lying" from his song "La Di Da Di". "Hey PMRC, you stupid fuckin' assholes / The sticker on the record is what makes 'em sell gold / Can't you see, you alcoholic idiots / The more you try to suppress us, the larger we get." "Freedom of Speech" was one of the first raps to focus on the First Amendment and in particular attacked Tipper Gore's PMRC with unmistakable venom: "What Ya Wanna Do" is a 9-minute party song featuring several members of the Syndicate, including a young Everlast, who became famous as a member of House of Pain. The busy, multi-layered composition, with its scratched sirens and staccato drums, samples Public Enemy's " Bring the Noise". ![]() "The Hunted Child" is a first-person account of a scared young gangbanger on the run. "This One's for Me" offers Ice's take on the rap scene and music industry. "But if it's in your heart, get a pen / Don't stop writing til the inkflow ends / Work and work and don't halfstep / Dog the mic every chance you get." After some gory sound effects, Ice says "Probably sound like that." "Hit the Deck" offers sincere advice to wannabe-MCs: Ice wonders aloud what it would sound like if you drilled into someone's head with a power drill. "Black and Decker" starts off with Rhyme Syndicate members complaining about the media's portrayal of their work as meaningless violence. "Said she wanted to take me home to make love / Now that's the kind of rap that brothers dream of / I said, "Fast, slow, hard or soft, baby?" / She said, "All the above!" In "The Girl Tried to Kill Me", Ice-T raps about an encounter with a dominatrix: However, it contains two surprising elements: in the end, the main character is killed, and the whole event is written off by the media as just another gang killing. Unlike other songs where violence is a metaphor for the rapper's ability to defeat other rappers lyrically, this song is a stark depiction of what could lead to such an event. ![]() "Peel Their Caps Back" is about committing a drive-by to avenge a slain friend. "You Played Yourself" advises listeners to be smart and not let themselves "be played". "The Weapon power has been witnessed upon my page/From Martin Luther's dream, to Hitler's psycho rage." "Lethal Weapon" tells listeners that the mind is the most powerful weapon: "The Iceberg" alternates between typical violent metaphor, outlandish boasts, and comical sexual situations involving other members of Ice's Rhyme Syndicate. ![]() But here comes the government and here come the parents, and they are ready to destroy you when you open your mouth'". "The concept of that picture is, 'Go ahead and say what you want. The album's cover, featuring a B-boy with a shotgun shoved in his mouth, and two pistols pressed against each side of his head, reflected Ice-T's experiences with the concept of freedom of speech. They were using the same tactics they used on everyone from Elvis and Jim Morrison to 2 Live Crew". You couldn't say anything they called a 'swear' word. In The Ice Opinion: Who Gives a Fuck? the rapper states that "People had already told me what I could not say onstage in Columbus, Georgia. The album was released after Ice-T was encountering censorship problems on tour. ![]() The album has an uncharacteristically gritty sound, featuring some of the darkest tracks that Ice-T ever released. Just Watch What You Say! is the third studio album by American rapper Ice-T, released on October 10, 1989, by Sire Records. He's on solid ground when talking about the breakthroughs of Slade, Carole King, Neil Young, or Marvin Gaye. But the most important year of the arena-rock era? Why not say 1970 or 1972? Hepworth would rank the importance (popularity or critical) of certain albums and the seminal years for certain artists, but his statistics are fudged. Pop critics, for example, agree that 1966 was a far stronger year for rock than the Summer of Love that followed, and Hepworth can make a decent case for the importance of 1971. It's fine that Hepworth wants to choose a year or period that is often neglected, as these are the areas that are richest to mine. Costello, in his recent memoir, describes how much he appreciates music of all genres, and says quite bluntly that there never was a golden age of anything. He adds the important caveat that we should attach particular negative handicaps to music that was released during our adolescent years, because the interplay between our adolescent hormones, developing neural networks, and the music we hear, leads us to the incorrect conclusion that the music we heard in teen years was the best ever made. In How Music Works, Byrne describes an unbroken continuum in music evolution since recorded music began early in the 20th century. David Byrne and Elvis Costello, in two excellent recent music memoirs/analyses, have taken a more defensible path. ![]() Hepworth seemed bound and determined to break all my personal taboos in one fell swoop. I also am annoyed when an author uses the phrase "golden era" to describe any genre of music or art. It's certainly wrong with 1170 BC or 1493, and it is wrong in rock music for the year 1971. I've made it known several times in the past that titling a book with a particular year is preposterous, because few trends can be summarized in a single year, and the attempt to do so leads the author to artificially stuff things into misshapen categories. One can average it out by awarding three stars as I did, though it would be tempting to scrawl a big red I for Incomplete across the title page. It's maddening to attempt to review a nonfiction musical history when both anecdotes and writing style are top-notch, yet the premise on which the book is crafted is totally misdirected. From the electric blue fur coat David Bowie wore when he first arrived in America in February to Bianca’s neckline when she married Mick Jagger in Saint-Tropez in May, from the death of Jim Morrison in Paris in July to the re-emergence of Bob Dylan at Madison Square Garden in August, from the soft launch of Carole King’s “Tapestry” in California in February to the sensational arrival of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” in London in November, Hepworth’s forensic sweep takes in all the people, places and events that helped make 1971 rock’s unrepeatable year. There’s a story behind every note of that music. In this entertaining and provocative book, he argues that 1971 saw an unrepeatable surge of musical creativity, technological innovation, naked ambition and outrageous good fortune that combined to produce music that still crackles with relevance today. The new releases of that hectic year―Don McLean’s “American Pie,” Sly Stone’s “Family Affair,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Joni Mitchell’s “Blue,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven,” the Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” and many others―are the standards of today.ĭavid Hepworth was twenty-one in 1971, and has been writing and broadcasting about music ever since. ![]() You might say this was the last day of the pop era.ġ971 started the following day and with it the rock era.
